JAKARTA, Sept 29, 2014 - (ANTARA) - From its 1st exhibition through this year's 22nd (Sept 18-28), the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) has certainly journeyed far over the years. The exhibition has gone through countless phases and periods before assuming its current position as the largest auto show in South East Asia. The success it enjoys today is the result of continued work and consistent effort from the country's industrial players, under the umbrella of GAIKINDO (The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries), the official association that gathers sole agents, distributors, and manufacturers of the automotive industry in Indonesia.

As the largest automotive organization in Indonesia, GAIKINDO has become a world-class, professional and independent automotive organization which plays an active role as the government's partner in developing the industry towards competition in the international market. To realize this vision, GAIKINDO mission is one of constantly transforming Indonesia's automotive industry and boosting its competitive edge in the global market. GAIKINDO has taken numerous measures to realize the vision, and one of them is conducting the Indonesia International Motor Show. IIMS serves as a medium that mirrors the development of the country's automotive industry before a global audience. Through IIMS, GAIKINDO demonstrates that the Indonesian automotive industry is continuously developing and holding huge potential.

Not merely an exhibition, IIMS has a constant mission in organizing each event; a grand theme that binds the entire organization of IIMS. IIMS consistently introduces themes that encourage positive development of the country's automotive industry, as this year, when the committee introduced "Smart & Safe Mobility" as the theme for IIMS 2014. IIMS also acts as the medium for GAIKINDO to strengthen its automotive networks with local and international partners. Throughout its long journey, IIMS has shared many stories and this journey has supported Indonesia in becoming one of the leading automotive players in South East Asia.

"IIMS is the biggest auto show in Indonesia, and serves as the benchmark for the automotive industry in the country, as well as in South East Asia. IIMS is a window that depicts the progress of the country's automotive industry. And with support from OICA, IIMS not only targets local consumers, but a global audience, and becomes the benchmark for the Indonesian automotive industry on a global level," said GAIKINDO Chairman, Sudirman MR.

Success of the Long IIMS Journey

First organized in 1986 by GAIKINDO, the exhibition was initially called the GAIKINDO Auto Expo. Taking place at the Jakarta Convention Center and occupying an exhibition area of 4,000 square meters, the exhibition brought 13 sole agents as the initial participants. In 1989, GAIKINDO Auto Expo changed its name to Jakarta Auto Expo. In 1992 and 1993, due to economic turbulence, the exhibition was postponed for two consecutive years. Jakarta Auto Expo returned in 1994 when the economic condition was gradually improving. In 1996, Jakarta Auto Expo set a record with 18 GAIKINDO members participating in the exhibition, which was organized over 9 days, drawing more than 200,000 visitors. The following year, the country was once again affected by global economic strife, forcing GAIKINDO to halt the exhibition for three consecutive years.

In 2000, the country's economic condition was reviving and the auto exhibition was renamed as the GAIKINDO Auto Expo. That year, GAIKINDO pioneered its collaboration with Dyandra Promosindo, one of the leading exhibition companies in Indonesia, and trusted Dyandra as organizer of the exhibition. With guidance from GAIKINDO, Dyandra Promosindo is constantly improving the exhibitions each and every year. These improvements are not only geared toward making the expo the biggest and best exhibition in Indonesia, but ensuring the expo be included in the global automotive agenda. The effort paid off in 2006 when the exhibition was granted the official endorsement of the OICA (The Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles). At that time, the exhibition changed its name to the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS).

The enthusiasm of APMs and the supporting industry to take part in the exhibition keeps increasing from year to year, and increases the need for a bigger exhibition area. Therefore, in 2009, GAIKINDO selected a new location at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo). In its first year at the new location, the exhibition faced many challenges as the global automotive industry was impacted by the tsunami that forced many countries, who regularly organize auto shows, to postpone or cancel their shows. Though Indonesia was also influenced by the economic crisis which affected the national automotive industry, GAIKINDO was determined to continue with the show. Strongly determined, GAIKINDO organized IIMS with an exhibition area of 40,410 square meters.

Flashing back to the first exhibition and comparing it with today's exhibition, IIMS has seen enormous progress. Since its initial exhibition in 1986, the IIMS exhibition area has grown by more than 20 times. Initially, the exhibition only occupied an exhibition area of 4,000 square meters; this year, the exhibition area reached 83,137 square meters. Participants have also grows significantly from 13 exhibitors in the first year to 36 exhibitors and 286 supporting industries in this year's exhibition.

"Looking back at its long journey, IIMS has shared many great moments; those involved in the organizing of the exhibition since its first year to date certainly have deep memories of the show. IIMS does not only belong to GAIKINDO; it also belongs to the people of Indonesia who love the automotive industry, and want the industry to advance in the global market," said Abiyoso Wietono, Automotive Division Manager, Dyandra Promosindo.

"Dyandra Promosindo, as organizer of IIMS for the last 14 years, is proud to be a part of IIMS' long journey, and witness its transformation to becoming the biggest international auto show in South East Asia. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped in organizing this year's IIMS. We hope IIMS will continue to grow along with the Indonesian automotive industry," said Abiyoso.

Abiyoso said the magnitude of IIMS is the result of strong synergy between GAIKINDO and Dyandra Promosindo, all APMs, other supporting exhibitors, as well as the media and the public who have consistently followed IIMS' long journey. On the final day of IIMS (28/09), the committee officially recorded a total of 380,365 visitors, while last year the total number was 373,661 visitors. The huge number of visitors demonstrates the public's huge interest in IIMS.

Though it is not the main objective of organizing of IIMS, total transactions recorded in this year's IIMS reflect the abundant need for transportation in Indonesia. The committee's official data showed that total transactions at this year's exhibition were IDR 5,456,759,380,000. The achievements of this year's IIMS indicate that national demand for country's automotive industry is still developing and still most promising.
