Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Some three thousand workers will hold rallies in several places in Jakarta on Tuesday to protest against the low official decent living standards (KHL) based on the result of a survey by the city government.

"The KHL in the cities around Jakarta, such as Karawang and Tangerang, is Rp2.6 million. However, the KHL in Jakarta is lower than that. As a matter of fact, the workers needs in the capital are higher than those in the buffer cities," M. Toha, the deputy chief of the Federation of Electronic and Machinery Metal Labor Unions, stated here on Monday.

Based on the result of the survey conducted during the period between February and October 2014, the KHL in Jakarta is Rp2.3 million.

Toha said the workers will stage rallies outside the Jakarta Manpower Office, the City Hall, the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Building, and the Manpower Ministry.

He alleged that the Jakarta Waging Council had committed some mistakes, which had harmed the interests of workers in calculating the KHL.

The mistakes included a decline in room rentals. Based on the survey result, the room rentals in Jakarta this year declined as compared to Rp671 thousand last year, he pointed out.

"The room rentals have automatically increased. However, the figure is less than Rp671 thousand this year," he noted.

Therefore, the federation has demanded that the KHL in Jakarta should be recalculated based on the result of the survey conducted from February to October 2014.(*)
