Bandung (ANTARA News) - Home-brewed alcohol killed 25 people in the districts of Sumedang and Garut in West Java, a spokesman of Garut Public Hospital said on Thursday.

Of the 25 casualties, nine were from Sumedang and 16 from Garut. They were treated in local hospitals and died at different times, Ade Sunarya, the spokesperson affirmed.

"Of the 20 victims treated in Garut Public Hospital, 16 died this morning," Sunarya noted, adding that they died of alcohol poisoning.

Furthermore, of the 61 people admitted to Sumedang Public Hospital after drinking the poisonous alcohol, nine died, one is critical, and 45 are being monitored by a medical team, according to Iman Budiman, a spokesman of the hospital.

He added that most of the victims were teenagers.

Moreover, the man who brewed the alcohol has been arrested by local police.(*)
