Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) Aziz Syamsuddin has urged President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to soon appoint a definitive police chief.

"Within the next one or two days, the president should take a stance to address the problem concerning the police chiefs post," Syamsuddin remarked here, Monday.

Recently, President Jokowi dismissed General Sutarman as police chief and appointed his deputy, Badrodin Haiti as acting police chief.

The acting police chief could not continue in the role for too long as it would affect strategic decisions.

"It should not take too long because an acting police chief could not take a strategic decision, as he lacks legitimacy," the legislator stated.

He was also of the viewpoint that the replacement of General Sutarman was not in line with the existing law.

Therefore, the Commission III planned to hold a faction meeting to discuss the problem, he revealed.

"I do not say that the dismissal violates (the law), but, in my view, it will affect the legitimacy of the national police," he stated.

Under Law No. 2/2002, if a police chief is dismissed, a new successor must be appointed accordingly, he stated.

"After the dismissal, the president should appoint a new police chief instead of an acting police chief," he noted.

President Jokowi had issued two decrees on Friday (January 16), dismissing General Sutarman as national police chief and appointing Deputy Police Chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as acting national police chief.

The decision was taken after National Police Chief hopeful Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, despite Parliaments approval, was named a graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission in connection with certain rewards he allegedly received through suspicious transactions.
