Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla expressed his condolences over the death of Singaporean former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who was an Asian influential leader.

"I along with the Indonesian government express our deepest condolences over the death of Lee Kuan Yew," Kalla stated here on Monday.

Kalla noted that Lee was an influential leader not only for Singapore but also for Asia as he had inspiring values on how a country can be developed in better ways.

Singapore's first prime minister Lee died at 3:18 am local time, on Monday (March 23), at the Singapore General Hospital.

I express my deepest condolences on the death of my father, stated Lee Hsien Loong, the son of Lee, who also served as the incumbent prime minister of Singapore, as quoted by AFP.

Lee Kuan Yew, also known as Singapore's founding father, died at the age of 91. He served as Singapore's prime minister for 31 years during the period between 1959 and 1990.

Lee, who oversaw Singapore's independence from Britain and separation from Malaysia, had been admitted in the hospital since February 5, 2015, for pneumonia and was on life support before he passed away in the early hours of Monday.
