Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian police have nabbed nine suspected members of a drug syndicate in possession of 2.1 tons of dry marijuana from Aceh.

The case was first uncovered on April 10, 2015, when police arrested two members of the syndicate Syahbuddin and M. Saleh with 540 kilograms of dry marijuana in Teluk Gelam, Ogan Komering Ilir in South Sumatra.

The arrests of the two led to more arrests of other members of the syndicate including Jhony bin Wellu in Central Jakarta on April 13 with 10 kg of the drug.

Later that month police arrested four more suspects - Jayadi alias Aji Yahya, Sudaryatno alias Nano, Ponto Khair Iskandar and Muhammad Iqbal in Depok with 166 kilograms of the drug.

On May 1, two other suspects Rusdi alias Si On and Sulaiman alias Sule were arrested with 1.4 tons ofdry marijuana in Slipi , West Jakarta .

All of the marijuana was from Aceh to be sold in Jakarta and other large cities in Java, police said.

Police also confiscated three trucks used by the suspects in transporting the drug from Aceh .

Around 21 million people including addicts are saved from falling deeper as victim with the success in preventing the drug from going to the market, polices chief of detectives Budi Waseso said here on Monday.

Budi Waseso said the marijuana would be destroyed after laboratory test to confirm that it is marijuana.

He said police would not close the case with the arrest but the marijuana fields have to be found to be destroyed in Aceh.

The nine suspects are facing a a jail term of up to 20 years if found guilty.

The present government has imposed tough measure against drug suspects. In January and last months the government executed more than ten drug convicts on death row.
