If we only develop more roads, they will not be able to accommodate the growing number of cars."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta needs several more railway networks to overcome its traffic congestion problems, Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) said here on Tuesday.

"Jakarta does not only need numerous networks of roads but a lot of railway networks, as well, so that traffic congestion can be reduced significantly," he stated at Jakarta City Hall.

Ahok added that the development of railway networks in large numbers is needed due to the consistent increase in the number of private cars.

"If we only develop more roads, they will not be able to accommodate the growing number of cars. This is why we need to provide people with an alternative in the form of railway services," he explained.

For this purpose, the governor affirmed that he fully supported the development of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) System and Light Rapid Transit (LRT) System.

"With the MRT and LRT systems, people will have more options for transportation. They may choose to leave their cars at home and opt for the mass transportation services," he remarked.

Ahok also expressed hope the development of railway transport systems will reduce traffic congestion across the city.

"We plan to develop elevated railway lines. So both elevated roads and railway tracks will be built," he noted.
