Medan (ANTARA News) - Returning home en masse for Idul Fitri or Lebaran festive season, traditionally known as "mudik", must be a momentum to bring enlightenment to the public, according to Ansari Yamamah, a sociologist at North Sumatra State Islamic University (UIN).

"Mudik should not simply become a routine. It must continue to be preserved as a momentum for public enlightenment," Ansari said here on Sunday.

He noted that by returning to hometowns and villages, people who have been living in urban areas can continue to maintain local wisdom such as honesty, solidarity, concern to others, and mutual cooperation.

Ansari remarked that local wisdom is indispensable for application in urban cosmopolitan life which has been less emphasis on the nations various cultures.

"Thus, homecoming or mudik should not be an opportunity to show off the wealth which will have a negative impact on the rural communities," he noted.

According to him, mudik is also a momentum for the urban community to enlighten the villagers about the realities urban life that requires knowledge, insight, expertise, and design of the future.

With the interaction and exchange of experience during homecoming, rural communities are expected to be able to equip themselves first if they want to migrate to urban areas.

"Living in the city requires skills capacity, and not only the capital of courage," said Ansari.
