Jakarta (ANTARA) - Three Uzbekistan nationals who had been detained for allegedly spreading terror propaganda attacked five immigration officers and anti-terror personnel in North Jakarta with knives and escaped detention on Monday (April 10, 2023).
One officer died in the attack, while one suspect later died of drowning in the Sunter River, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Police's anti-terror squad Densus 88, Senior Commissioner Aswin Siregar, confirmed here on Tuesday.
Last week, Densus 88 had nabbed four Uzbekistan nationals for allegedly spreading terror propaganda on social media platforms.
The four suspects were detained at the immigration office for the process of deportation, Siregar said.
Around 4 a.m. on April 10, three of the Uzbeks tried to flee detention and attacked three immigration officers in the office and two anti-terror squad personnel on duty.
One of the immigration officers, Adi Widodo, was killed in the attack. Four other officers suffered minor to severe injuries.
The four Uzbekistan nationals were identified as Bekhzod Anorbek Ugli Baytoev (BAB), Olimjon Mukhtor Ugli Makhmudov (OMM), Murodjon Ibrokhimjon Ugli Rakhimov (MIR), and Bakhromjon KabilDjanovich Azizov (BKA).
"Three of them fled, but one person (BKA) chose to stay and refused to flee," Siregar said.
The three others escaped from the detention room by breaking the ceiling and attacking the officers who were partaking the suhur (pre-dawn meal) and preparing for the fajr prayer.
"The perpetrators attacked the personnel with knives they took from the pantry," he added.
However, in less than 24 hours, Densus 88 managed to nab them again. Suspect OMM was arrested at 10:50 a.m. from a shophouse near Bukit Gading Indah residential complex.
At 8:30 p.m., another suspect MIR was arrested from a water tunnel on Sunter River, while BAB was found dead in the river at 2:40 p.m.
"(BAB) died after he plunged into the river and drowned. His remains were brought to Kramat Jati Hospital for an autopsy," Siregar informed.
Based on the police investigation, BAB, OMM, and MIR are part of an international terror organization that is active in the Middle East region, especially Syria. While BKA has been providing them with financial support as well as fake documents.
They arrived in Indonesia separately from Istanbul (Turkey) after transiting from Abu Dhabi (the UAE) and entered Indonesia via Malaysia, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Police, Brig. Gen Ahmad Ramadhan, said.
