Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) agreed to immediately discuss tariff negotiations intensively and prepare a cooperation framework within the next 60 days.

This agreement was reached on Sunday during a ministerial meeting between the Indonesian delegation, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and the USTR, led by Ambassador Jamieson Greer, in Washington, D.C.

"At the technical level, we immediately worked quickly to carry out a technical meeting with the USTR team," Hartarto noted in a statement on Monday.

In the meeting, the two parties began discussing several key issues of common concern, including non-tariff barriers, digital trade, sectoral tariffs, and market access.

According to Hartarto, Indonesia is pushing for the completion of the discussion within two months to implement the result of the negotiation immediately.

"The 60-day deadline will be used to complete the discussion of issues. We still have the remaining 30 days (from the 90-day pause) to implement the agreement," the minister explained.

He expressed hope that the format, mechanism, and schedule for the negotiation would be agreed upon shortly.

The initial discussion between both parties included an in-depth study of the offers and requests from both parties and an exploration of the format and stages of the negotiation process.

Meanwhile, the USTR welcomed the proposal submitted by Indonesia and is currently drafting a working document as the basis for the scope and substance of the negotiations.

This document will later reflect the joint position of both parties on various technical issues.

The issues currently being explored include import licensing; digital trade and Customs Duties on Electronic Transmissions (CDET); pre-shipment inspections; surveyor obligations; and domestic component level (TKDN) provisions for the industrial sector.

The discussion was also directed at the implementation of reciprocal and sectoral tariffs, including strengthening market access for both countries.

Both countries are committed to encouraging intensive dialogue in order to reach a mutually beneficial agreement within the specified time limit.
