Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) released findings of 16 cosmetic products containing harmful and prohibited substances in response to a recent rise in the circulation of illegal cosmetics.
"In the findings of cosmetics containing harmful and banned substances, 10 are cosmetic items produced under contract manufacturing, while the other six items are imported," BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar noted in the agency's statement received here on Tuesday.
These products were discovered during BPOM's inspection between January and March 2025.
Ikrar explained that sampling and testing revealed the 16 items contained harmful and illegal substances, such as mercury, retinoic acid, hydroquinone, lead, and Red K10 dye.
"Cosmetics containing harmful and banned substances can pose health risks to consumers," he remarked.
The health hazards of harmful substances in cosmetics vary widely, ranging from mild to severe.
Mercury, for example, can cause skin discoloration, allergic reactions, skin irritation, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and kidney damage.
Retinoic acid may result in dry skin, a burning sensation, and changes in the form or function of fetal organs in pregnant women. Hydroquinone can cause hyperpigmentation, leading to ochronosis, as well as changes in the color of the cornea and nails.
Lead in cosmetics can damage organ function and body systems, while the Red K10 dye can increase the risk of cancer and disrupt liver function.
Ikrar stated that business operators who produce or distribute cosmetics that do not meet safety, efficacy, and quality standards may face administrative and criminal sanctions.
"BPOM has revoked distribution permits and temporarily suspended these products found to contain banned and harmful substances," he stated.
Products found to contain harmful substances include BOGOTA Night Cream Hello Bright, MAXIE Brightening Series Premium Night Cream, SANIYE Long Lasting Capsule Lip Gloss L1135 14#, SANIYE Non-stick Lip Gloss L1181 4#, SANIYE 5 Colours Multi Functions Concealer Palette R1179, SANIYE Fashion Lady Non-stick Lip Gloss L1180 #07, SANIYE 12 Colors Multi-Function Eyeshadow Palette E225 #1, and PEACH Eyeshadow (10 Colours) No. 1.
