Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has removed 1.335 million pieces of online gambling content since October 21 of last year.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Minister Meutya Hafid revealed that more than 1.2 million items were found on online gambling sites, while the remaining 132,000 were detected on social media platforms.

Complaints related to online gambling content from websites are relatively easier to handle, she explained, as the ministry can immediately block access to websites hosting such content.

However, this is not possible for content on digital platforms like social media, Hafid noted.

She mentioned that the ministry has implemented the Content Moderation Compliance System (SAMAN) to manage negative content on digital platforms.

Through SAMAN, the ministry forwards complaints or findings related to online gambling content to digital platforms, which then review and block access to the content if it violates regulations.

Unfortunately, Hafid said, digital platforms have sometimes been slow to respond to complaints related to online gambling content.

As an example, she noted that during the first month of SAMAN’s implementation (March to April), at least 214 complaints related to online gambling content were registered, but only 198 were followed up on.

“Facebook has been recorded as the platform with the highest number of unaddressed complaints, with eight complaints left unresolved,” she added.

Hafid also expressed appreciation for the digital platforms that have been responsive and encouraged others to strengthen their collaboration and commitment to eradicating online gambling in Indonesia.
