Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Amelia Anggraini, has called on the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to ensure that the disposal of unserviceable ammunition is conducted in areas free of civilian presence.
She referenced the recent incident in Garut, West Java, where an explosion during ammunition disposal resulted in the deaths of four TNI personnel and nine civilians.
"This practice is highly dangerous and could trigger subsequent explosions, as is suspected to have occurred in the Garut incident," she said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to Anggraini, the TNI and all relevant authorities must demonstrate greater concern and responsibility in managing ammunition depots, especially those located near residential areas.
She also urged the military to prevent public access to leftover ammunition materials.
The legislator, who oversees defense and military affairs, asked the Ministry of Defense and the TNI leadership to promptly relocate and redesign all TNI ammunition depots, taking demographic changes and spatial planning into account.
In addition, she requested the TNI to update national ammunition disposal safety standards and eliminate all potential interactions between civilians and hazardous materials, both directly and through informal activities.
Anggraini noted that relocating ammunition depots would be a complex task, as many were originally built in remote areas that have since become densely populated.
However, she emphasized that population changes should not be used as an excuse to ignore existing risks.
"Commission I of the DPR RI will continue to monitor and oversee the management system of ammunition and armament depots as part of efforts to protect the lives of military personnel and civilians," she affirmed.
Expressing deep condolences for the victims, she said that the government must provide concrete support for the victims and affected families.
"A major tragedy due to an ammunition depot explosion, which killed dozens of civilians, also occurred in Cilandak in 1984. Let's not allow this tragic history to repeat itself," she added.
