Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has praised Generation Z for their growing preference to use the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) as a primary payment method, highlighting their role in advancing Indonesia’s digital economy.

In a video shared by his office on Sunday, Gibran commended the tech-savvy generation -- born between 1997 and 2012 -- for embracing a more convenient, digital-first lifestyle.

"Your speed and willingness to adopt new technologies have significantly contributed to the growth of digital products in Indonesia," he said, thanking Gen Z for their widespread use of QRIS.

Gibran noted that QRIS has become a go-to payment method across all levels of commerce, from shopping malls to street vendors.

"Today, we can simply use our phones to pay with QRIS -- whether we’re shopping at a mall or buying snacks like cendol, kerak telor, or seblak from street vendors," he said.

He then cited data from Bank Indonesia, which showed that QRIS-facilitated transactions had crossed one billion as of March 2025, a 173 percent increase compared to the previous year.

"This widespread adoption wouldn’t have been possible without the role of Gen Z. Growing up in a digital era, they are highly adaptable to technological advancements," he added.

He underlined that the current digital payment trend is in contrast with the pre-2019 era, which was marked with rather inefficient online and offline payment systems.

Online payments required ATM or mobile banking transfers, which were cumbersome and came with interbank fees.

Alluding to inconvenient offline payment methods, the VP reminisced about the people having to use cards or cash, often causing delays as sellers searched for change, ultimately leading to long queues.

Gibran emphasized that the launch of QRIS in 2019 marked a turning point, enabling faster, simpler transactions -- no wallets, no cash, no cards needed.
