Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto held a limited meeting with a number of ministers on Tuesday to discuss preparations for building a giant sea wall along the north coast of Java Island, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.

"President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting regarding the readiness to establish a giant sea wall along the north coast of Java Island," he informed in a statement regarding the meeting, which took place at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday.

He said that the giant sea wall initiative is part of the government's effort to protect coastal areas that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels.

The sea wall is expected to not only protect coastal areas from the threat of abrasion, but also increase environmental resilience and provide a source of clean water to coastal areas, he added.

"The construction of this sea wall is expected to prevent tidal flooding, reduce coastal subsidence, and become a clean water reservoir," he expounded.

The government expects the project to provide better protection to communities living along the north coast of Java Island and build sustainable environmental resilience for the future.

As per available information, the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development is continuing to coordinate with various parties on the project, which takes forward plans to protect coastal communities.

The Ministry of Public Housing has been working with the Netherlands and South Korea since 2016 to study the construction of the sea wall from Cilegon to Gresik, which is projected to measure 946 kilometers in length.

Besides discussing the readiness of sea wall construction, Prabowo also led a limited meeting regarding waste management across Indonesia.

The government has initiated a national movement on waste management by collaborating with investors through the Danantara Indonesia Investment Management Agency.
