Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta police reported on Tuesday that two men were arrested for allegedly trafficking one kilogram of crystal methamphetamine in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Sunday, June 22.

The suspects, identified only as WI and RZ, were apprehended with the drug package they intended to sell in the Cengkareng area, according to Jakarta Police Narcotics Unit Head, Adjunct Commissioner Emir Maharto.

The raid was conducted on Sunday at 8:45 p.m., following a tip-off from residents who suspected the two of dealing drugs in the neighborhood, Maharto added.

The suspects told investigators that the meth was intended for distribution in East Java. Maharto noted that the investigation is ongoing.

Indonesia remains an attractive target for drug traffickers due to its large population and high number of users. The value of the country’s illicit drug trade is estimated at around Rp66 trillion (approximately US$4.3 billion).

As a result, drug abuse has become a serious and life-threatening issue for millions of Indonesians.

A survey by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) estimates that 3.4 million people in Indonesia use drugs. According to the study, roughly 180 out of every 10,000 Indonesians aged 15 to 64 are affected by drug addiction.
