Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has not ruled out the possibility of President Prabowo Subianto meeting directly with US President Donald Trump to renegotiate the 32 percent tariff imposed by the United States on Indonesian products.
"There is a possibility, but I can't say for sure when," said State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi on Friday, noting that no meeting between the two leaders has been scheduled yet.
Prabowo is currently on a two-week state visit to four countries. After visiting Saudi Arabia and Brazil, he is scheduled to travel to Belgium and France.
Indonesia’s tariff negotiation team, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, is currently in the US to continue discussions on the matter.
"We hope the US government will consider reviewing the tariff. We trust the negotiation team will deliver the best results for Indonesia," Hadi added.
He emphasized that the tariff policy is unrelated to Indonesia’s recent accession to BRICS — an intergovernmental organization comprising 11 major emerging economies, including China and Russia.
"The 32 percent tariff was imposed long before Indonesia was declared a full BRICS member," Hadi stressed.
In a letter dated July 7 and addressed to Prabowo, Trump confirmed the decision to maintain the 32 percent tariff, despite ongoing negotiations.
However, Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said there is still room for further negotiations to reduce the tariff.
"Based on the letter, we believe there’s still an opportunity for continued discussions. The US government is expected to respond further. The tariff isn’t final," he said on July 9.
He added that the Indonesian government will make full use of all available opportunities to safeguard national interests moving forward.
