Jakarta (ANTARA) - Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti clarified that the literacy and numeracy assessment conducted during the 2025-2026 school orientation period will not determine whether students pass or fail.

"Do not view the literacy-numeracy assessment as a test, alright. This assessment is more like a preliminary step to gauge their reading and writing skills," the minister remarked here on Friday.

Mu'ti explained that the assessment results will instead help teachers identify children's skill levels at the start of the school year. This will enable teachers to formulate teaching methods that suit the students' abilities, helping them to grasp subjects better.

"For (students) who are struggling, there may need to be some form of bridging so they are not left behind," he noted.

The minister highlighted that the idea for these assessments came from observations and videos showing that some middle and high school students still have difficulties with reading and mathematics, which hindered effective and efficient learning.

The literacy and numeracy assessment will last an hour and is part of the 2025/2026 Friendly School Orientation (MPLS Ramah) for secondary and high school education.
