Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto condoled the death of former top minister and renowned economist Kwik Kian Gie on Monday evening.
“My condolences for the passing of Kwik Kian Gie. January 11, 1935 – July 28, 2025,” the President said in a post on his Instagram handle @prabowo on Tuesday.
The post was accompanied by a black-and-white picture of the former minister.
Gie, who was born in Pati, Central Java, on January 11, 1935, and had Chinese roots, transitioned from entrepreneurship to national politics, briefly serving as deputy speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) in October 1999.
He was later appointed coordinating minister for economic, financial, and industrial affairs under President Abdurrahman Wahid from 1999 to 2000. He was also state minister for national development planning/head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) from 2001 to 2004 under the presidency of Megawati Soekarnoputri.
A member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), he acted as an economic advisor to Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Salhuddin Uno during their 2019 presidential bid, opposing his party’s candidate pair—and eventual winners—Joko Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin.
The late economist founded the Kwik Kian Gie School of Business in North Jakarta. He was awarded the Star of Mahaputera, 2nd Class (Adipradana), in 2005.
