Malang, Jawa Timur (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, has initiated the establishment of a migrant center, which will serve as a service and information hub to create globally competitive prospective Indonesian migrant workers (CPMIs).

After attending an event marking Global Talent Day in Singosari district, Malang, East Java, on Saturday, Iskandar said that the migrant center will be established in collaboration with Indonesian universities. “I am committed to building the migrant center,” he added.

He informed that the migrant center was conceived to provide certainty to CPMIs so that they can earn a decent living abroad. “So, from the village level until departure and return, everything was part of an empowerment system,” he said.

According to Iskandar, the migrant center will provide various services, such as advocacy and empowerment of CPMIs and retired PMIs.

“There is a research process to ensure a very systematic concept from upstream to downstream,” he said.

In addition to universities, he said, the migrant center will also collaborate with ministries and external government agencies.

He informed that the collaboration will enable the center to provide accurate information to people looking to work abroad, customized to the capabilities of each CPMI. “So we’re making this more effective and filtered,” he said.

He added that at the migrant center, CPMIs will be able to access other services, such as improving their foreign language skills and work skills. “Because those are basic necessities for working abroad,” he explained.

Iskandar said he believes that the initiative could help CPMIs lead a better life by securing promising jobs. “We want this to be integrated from the recruitment process until they return home or after working,” he added.

During his visit to Malang Regency, the minister also provided empowerment assistance to retired migrant workers who have set up businesses in their hometowns.

The aid was symbolically handed over to three former migrant workers and included an egg oven, a coffee machine, and a cup sealer.

The production equipment assistance was tailored to the type of business each worker is currently operating.
