Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have formalized a sister city partnership as a concrete platform to address shared challenges and build resilient, livable, and sustainable cities for future generations.
“We face similar challenges, from traffic congestion and increasing demand for public services, to the threats of climate change, but we also have great opportunities to learn from and support each other,” said DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in an official statement released in Jakarta on Monday.
The signing of the Letter of Intent (LOI) for the cooperation was carried out by Governor Pramono and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Dato’ Seri Maimunah in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A sister city partnership is an official cooperation agreement between two cities in different countries, aimed at fostering friendship, cultural exchange, education, economic ties, and sometimes technical collaborations.

This marks the third long-term cooperation agreement signed by Pramono in the past six months, following similar partnerships with Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, and Heidelberg, Germany.
According to Pramono, the Jakarta–Kuala Lumpur partnership will strengthen collaboration in several strategic sectors, including public health and well-being, flood prevention and mitigation, green building development and energy decarbonization, sustainable transportation, waste management, as well as cultural and tourism exchanges.
He emphasized that the cooperation is not merely symbolic, but a tangible framework to address mutual challenges and create resilient, livable, and sustainable cities for future generations.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Dato’ Seri Maimunah expressed appreciation for Pramono’s visit.
The partnership between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta is growing stronger, and will bring real benefits to both cities, she said.
