Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 4.9-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, and surrounding regions on Wednesday at 7:54 p.m. local time, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Based on the agency’s official report, the epicenter was located 14 kilometers southeast of Bekasi District in West Java, east of Jakarta, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
As of now, BMKG has not received any reports of damage or casualties. The agency also noted that the earthquake data may be updated as more information becomes available.
In response to the tremor, BMKG urged residents to remain calm and avoid reacting to unverified information. They also advised people to inspect the structural integrity of their homes and check for any signs of damage.
Despite the lack of reported damage, several residents in Greater Jakarta said they were startled by the quake.
At the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters in South Jakarta, the tremor prompted office staff to rush outside to open areas.
“We were resting after the inauguration of Jakarta’s police chief when the earthquake suddenly struck. It was strong,” said Dura, a cleaning staff member at the headquarters.
Meanwhile, Ferliansyah, a resident of North Tambun in Bekasi District, shared that people in his neighborhood evacuated their homes and moved to open spaces when the quake hit.
“I was shocked when I saw the glass on the dining table swaying. My children also felt the tremor while they were in bed,” he said.
