Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Embassy in Dili, along with Timor Leste authorities, is investigating the death of an Indonesian citizen from East Nusa Tenggara who was found with gunshot wounds in Timor Leste.

Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, confirmed that the embassy received a report on August 17, regarding the death of a citizen with the initials AB in the Fatumea Suai region.

Involing the Belu Police and the Indonesian Border Security Task Force, the investigation revealed that on August 16, 2025, AB and 19 other Indonesian citizens illegally crossed the border without inspection to hunt wild animals.

They separated into four groups. After hearing gunshots, the hunters fled back toward the border.

AB, however, did not return. His body was found the next day with gunshot wounds.

AB's family and colleagues did not report the incident to authorities, and the family independently handled the evacuation.

The family has since buried the body and refused an autopsy, which is hampering the official investigation.

This incident serves as a reminder for Indonesian citizens to refrain from illegal border crossings for activities like hunting.

The Indonesian Embassy in Dili will continue to coordinate with Timorese authorities to resolve the case.
