Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the leaders of the DPR and its factions have agreed to stop the monthly housing allowance of Rp50 million (around US$3,037) for legislators.

"For the first point, the DPR agreed to stop the provision of housing allowance for DPR members as of August 31, 2025," he said in a press conference at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Friday.

According to him, the decision was taken in response to the "17+8 People's Demands" that were called for by various groups.

Apart from that, he continued, the DPR has imposed a moratorium on overseas working visits, effective as of September 1, except for attending state invitations.

He further said that the DPR will cut its members' allowances and facilities after evaluation, including electricity, telephone, and transportation allowances.

"The DPR will strengthen transparency and meaningful public participation in the legislation process and other policies," he remarked.

Protests spread last week across multiple Indonesian regions, criticizing perks given to DPR members, among other things.

Some public figures and activists have formulated the 17+8 Demands from the People, comprising 17 demands that must be fulfilled in one week and 8 demands that must be fulfilled in one year.

The demands include freezing the salary or allowance increase for DPR members and canceling the provision of new facilities, as well as demanding that the DPR transparently and periodically publish the salaries and allowances of its members.

President Prabowo Subianto earlier asked the leadership of the DPR and leaders of political parties to remind their members serving as legislators to be sensitive to the community's situation and continuously support the interests of the community following the recent protests.
