Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian police have named 12 suspects in connection with the mob looting of the residence of suspended lawmaker Surya Utama, popularly known as Uya Kuya, in East Jakarta on August 30.
At a press conference on Saturday, East Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal said the suspects face charges ranging from inciting looting to theft and assaulting security officers.
He added that the police investigation is ongoing to uncover more details.
On September 2, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dicky Fertoffan, head of the local police Criminal Investigation Unit, said dozens of people allegedly involved in the attack had been detained. Viral videos were used to identify perpetrators, and stolen furniture from Uya Kuya's home was recovered as evidence.
The attack on Uya Kuya’s house was among several similar incidents targeting residences of House of Representatives (DPR) members and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati amid demonstrations over government, parliament, and police policies.
Public anger was fueled after lawmakers were seen dancing during the 2025 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on August 15, coinciding with a proposed Rp50 million (around US$3,000) monthly housing allowance hike for legislators.
The backlash sparked a mass protest at the Parliament Complex on August 25 that later spread to other regions. After the death of a motorcycle taxi driver who was run over by a police vehicle during a protest, some rallies escalated into clashes, arson, and looting.
Uya Kuya later clarified in a video that his dancing was meant as a gesture of respect to musicians, not as a dismissal of public concerns.
Amid the unrest, the DPR revoked the housing allowance plan, while political parties suspended Uya Kuya and four other legislators over their controversial behavior.
