Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) will reform its scholarship program to better align graduates with the country’s development priorities, the agency’s director said Tuesday.

LPDP President Director Sudarto told lawmakers that the program will no longer focus solely on admissions but will guide candidates from the start so they understand how their studies connect to strategic industries and universities.

The LPDP is working with the ministries of higher education, primary and secondary education, and religious affairs to design the reforms, he said during a hearing with Parliament’s Commission XI.

Scholarships will prioritize science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as other fields linked to STEM, to support eight national priority sectors: food, energy, maritime, health, digitalization, defense, downstream processing, and advanced manufacturing.

Sudarto said the agency will also designate priority study programs and world-class universities that match national needs. Joint, dual or double degree schemes with co-funding will be expanded to strengthen recipients’ skills.

The scholarships will be tailored to industrial demand, ensuring that graduates from domestic and overseas programs contribute directly to industry stakeholders. Non-degree training will also be offered to develop targeted expertise.

From management to alumni support, reforms will cover promotion, selection, orientation, services, and post-graduation engagement. Alumni contributions to strategic sectors will be tracked and coordinated, Sudarto said.

The agency also plans to link graduates more closely with industries, state-owned enterprises and government agencies, including through bonded service arrangements.

“LPDP alumni will be directed to play a stronger role in national industries and economic growth,” Sudarto told lawmakers.
