Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) condemned the detention of Indonesian journalists by Israeli forces during a Gaza-bound humanitarian mission and urged stronger protection for reporters working in conflict zones.
PWI Chairman Akhmad Munir said intercepting civilian humanitarian missions in international waters was unjustifiable and endangered journalists carrying out professional duties.
“We strongly condemn Israel’s interception and detention of the humanitarian mission heading to Gaza, including Indonesian journalists on assignment,” Munir said in a statement Tuesday.
Among the five detained Indonesians, three were journalists: Bambang Noroyono and Thoudy Badai of Republika, and Andre Prasetyo Nugroho of Tempo.
Munir said the journalists joined the Global Sumud Flotilla mission to report on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and that their safety and independence must be respected by all parties.
“The press exists to deliver facts and humanitarian voices to the world. There must be no intimidation or actions threatening journalists performing their professional duties,” he said.

According to Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, at least 10 vessels in the humanitarian mission were intercepted by Israeli forces, including Amanda, Barbaros, Josef and Blue Toys.
The ministry said five of nine Indonesians participating in the mission were detained by Israeli authorities.
The vessels carrying the Indonesian journalists and activists were intercepted Monday while sailing from Turkiye to Gaza.
PWI said communication with the vessels carrying the Indonesian journalists had not been established and their condition remained unclear.
The journalists’ association said it supported the Indonesian government’s diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and protection of all Indonesians involved in the humanitarian mission.
The Foreign Ministry has coordinated with Indonesian embassies in Cairo, Rome, Amman and Istanbul to prepare assistance for detained citizens.
“Our prayers and hopes are with all journalists and humanitarian volunteers for their safety and swift return,” Munir said.
