Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo is scheduled to inaugurate Commissioner General Tito Karnavian as the new chief the Indonesian police here on Wednesday.

"Pak (Mr) Tito will be inaugurated on July 13," presidential spokesman Johan Budi told newsmen here on Tuesday.

He denied that any other officials will also be inaugurated that day. "According to the schedule, only the new police chief will be inaugurated that day," he clarified.

Tito Karnavian would be inaugurated since the parliament had approved his nomination by the President on June 27.

Tito is currently the chief of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and had earlier held the posts of chiefs of Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command from 2015-2016 and the Papua regional police command from 2012 to 2015.

Tito was among the police officers who had received extraordinary promotion when he was a member of the Bareskrim (crime investigation) team that successfully paralyzed terrorist suspect Dr Azahari and his men in Batu, Malang, East Java, on November 9, 2005.

He received the award from then national police chief, General Sutanto, along with his colleagues, including Idham Azis, Petrus Reihnard Golose and Rycko Amelza Dahniel.

Tito would replace current chief General Badrodin Haiti who would retire soon.(*)
