"I have coordinated with the Commander of the National Armed Forces, Chief of the National Police, and Chief of the State Intelligence Agency. I asked, 'what if we revoke the Internet access restriction there in Papua?'"Jakarta (ANTARA) - Internet access in Papua and West Papua Province will normalize on September 5, provided the situation remains peaceful for the next two days, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto stated in Jakarta Tuesday. "I have coordinated with the Commander of the National Armed Forces, Chief of the National Police, and Chief of the State Intelligence Agency. I asked, 'what if we revoke the Internet access restriction there in Papua?'" Wiranto remarked.
What he learned from the three officials who are in Papua was that circulation of fake news had reduced in Papua and there were almost no provocative messages being relayed. In other words, Papua was stable.
"Nonetheless, regarding today's situation, based on the prediction of security, the government only needed to extend the time to have an assurance about this," Wiranto stated.
The Government has partially and tentatively restored the Internet access, according to Wiranto. It is still possible for Papuans to send texts and access WhatsApp instant messaging services.
"Recently, there had been a number of fake stories, provocative messages circulating, with a 'negative tune' that worsened the already chaotic state. Thus, according to the regulation, we are sorry to say we slowed down the Internet access in several areas in Papua," Wiranto explained. (INE)
