Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud M. D. met with Japanese Director General of Counterterrorism Shigenobu Fukumoto to discuss a plan for cooperation in the context of counterterrorism.

Chief of the Indonesian National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPTG) Commissioner General Alius Suhardi accompanied Mahfud M. D. during the meeting held at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs in Jakarta on Friday.

Mahfud stated that the meeting discussed a plan for counterterrorism cooperation and de-radicalism steps that the two nations will take.

He remarked that Japan is also concerned over the threat of terrorism. Furthermore, terrorists currently employ more sophisticated technology.

"Hence, we can explore several areas of cooperation. Moreover, there will be in place a type of forum, such as a joint team, to discuss terrorism and regional security," he stated.

However, the ex-chief of the Constitutional Court stated that the discussion with Japanese Director General of Countertrrorism Shigenobu Fukumoto is yet in the preliminary stage of cooperation and is general in nature.

"Not yet, we only discussed the principles," he noted.

He remarked that the joint team will comprise personnel from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and the Japanese Directorate General of Counterterrorism. "Some of them will come from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and the rest from Japan," he stated.

He noted that the outcome of the meeting between both nations will likely be realized this year.
