According to the Coordinating Ministry of Economy, Indonesia had shared the proposals earlier with ministerial-level officials of G20 member states during the G20 extraordinary Sherpa meeting, which was held online the day before the world leaders' meeting.
The Indonesian government’s first suggestion was stepping up protection of vulnerable groups, including the elderly, small and medium enterprises, and low-wage workers.
Next, it asked world leaders to ensure the safety of health workers serving at clinics and hospitals, as currently, many countries are struggling to provide protective gear such as masks and gloves, as well as medical equipment, including ventilators.
It urged governments to ensure health workers have safe access to medicines and basic protective gear that meet the standards set by the UN's World Health Organization (WHO).
The Indonesian Government also asked world leaders to facilitate the trade of vaccines as well as other medical equipment by easing tariffs on their import and export.
It further suggested that financial aid at the global level be utilized in accordance with the needs of individual member states.
Lastly, it called on world leaders to strengthen collaboration on coronavirus control and prevention. (INE)
