Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will host the first round of the 2023 UCI Track Nations Cup, which will also serve as a qualifying championship for countries participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The UCI Track Nations Cup will be held at the Jakarta International Velodrome Rawamangun, East Jakarta, from February 23 to 26, 2023, and will feature keirin, individual sprint, team sprint, Madison, Omnium, and team pursuit events.

The executive board of the Indonesian Cycling Association (PB ISSI) held a coordination meeting with the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and several ministries/agencies at the KOI Office in Jakarta on Friday to strengthen preparations for the competition.

"This is a world championship that is almost at the same level as F1 and the exposure is greater because it will be covered by 135 countries and attended by (athletes from) 50 countries. Approximately, 600 bicycle athletes will participate," KOI's executive committee Jadi Rajagukguk said in a press release received here on Friday.

The coordination meeting was also attended by a representative from the World Cycling Federation (UCI), Gilles Peruzzi, who came to ensure the readiness of the Jakarta International Velodrome ahead of the competition.

Peruzzi, who is also the UCI Head of Track, said that the UCI Track Nations Cup will be an important event for Indonesia since it will be the first event from which points will be counted and included in the qualifications for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"This is an important event for Indonesia because the points collected in this championship will be included as a qualifying point for countries participating in the Paris Olympics. This is the country's first qualification out of six qualifying events for the Nation Cup. So, this is very important," Peruzzi emphasized.

The 2023 UCI Track Nations Cup will comprise three series, which will take place in Jakarta in February, Cairo (Egypt) on March 14–17, and Milton (Canada) on April 20–23.

It will also be a qualifying event for the 2023 UCI Track World Championships in Scotland from August 3–9.
