Research and innovation technology are two sides of a coin which cannot be separated and are interrelated with one another.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has committed to establishing an intellectual property ecosystem by optimizing the protection of patents on research and innovation results to encourage Indonesia’s economic growth.

"Research and innovation technology are two sides of a coin which cannot be separated and are interrelated with one another," deputy for research and innovation facilitation at BRIN Agus Haryono said here on Thursday.

He made the statement at a seminar on “Intellectual Property Ecosystem in Utilizing Research and Innovation Results,” which was held at BRIN’s BJ Habibie Building in Jakarta.

Currently, the total intellectual property owned by BRIN has reached 2,389 patents, 352 copyright registrations, 122 industrial designs, 17 plant variety rights, and 46 brands, he informed.

The agency registered more than 400 patent applications in 2022. Meanwhile, it is targeting to apply for 600 new patents in 2023, the BRIN’s deputy said.

"We want to create an ecosystem that allows both of the existing intellectual property and the ones which are being prepared to be registered to be utilized as soon as possible by industry (players) and the community," he noted.

Director general of intellectual property at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Min Usihen, said that BRIN’s programs could encourage the application of intellectual property-based research that could be utilized to spur national economic growth.

She added that her party will always support BRIN in protecting the intellectual property of the results of national research programs, utilizing intellectual property data and information, as well as developing the capacity of the researchers and inventors.

"We hope that we can build an intellectual property ecosystem which can become a pillar for economic recovery and encourage the acceleration of national economic development," she stated.

Earlier, BRIN and the Law and Human Rights Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 1, 2023, to integrate and optimize national research and innovation results for developing law and human rights sectors in Indonesia.

In addition to the MoU, a cooperation agreement was also inked by BRIN’s deputy for research and innovation facilitation and the ministry’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property to encourage the use of domestic intellectual property to improve industrial competitiveness, science and technology capacity, and national economy.
