Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) on Friday nominated Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo as the party's candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election.

PDI-P chairwoman and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri personally announced the nomination during the party's internal consolidation and Eid al-Fitr gathering event at Batu Tulis, Bogor City, West Java.

"I designate Mr Ganjar Pranowo, currently the governor of Central Java, as the party cadre and officer, who will receive the assignment to be the candidate of the President of the Republic of Indonesia from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle," Soekarnoputri stated, as observed from the party's YouTube channel.

Earlier, PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristyanto said he was convinced that Pranowo's nomination, as a presidential candidate, will create ripples in the national political sphere.

"The pendulum will be determined by the presidential candidate named by Mrs Soekarnoputri later," the party secretary general stated at Pasar Senen Station, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (April 18).

According to the 2024 Elections timetable, the registration of presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs will take place from October 19 to November 25, 2023.

The presidential election, along with elections for regional heads and national and regional legislatures, is scheduled for February 14, 2024.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's election law determines that a president and vice president candidate pair is nominated by a political party or a coalition of political parties, with at least 20 percent of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) seats or 25 percent of votes in the last election.

Hence, a presidential and vice presidential candidate pair must be supported by at least 115 members of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) -- out of 575 parliament members -- or by a political party or a party coalition having secured at least 34.99 million votes in the 2019 election.
