Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded residents, who fled their houses after the Mentawai-Siberut M6.9 earthquake and a tsunami warning on Tuesday morning, to return to their houses.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said the Agency had ended the tsunami early warning after the 6.9-magnitude tectonic earthquake centered in Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra Province.

"We have ended the tsunami early warning at 05:17 local time. Therefore, we ask residents, who are still in the mountains, to return to their respective houses," she noted in a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Karnawati also ensured that conditions in the region are safe and calm. However, she reminded the public to be vigilant since at this time, there is still a possibility of aftershocks that are getting weaker.

Karnawati said the highest magnitude of the last recorded tectonic earthquake only reached 5.0.

As long as it is confirmed that the house is intact, not damaged, and not cracked, residents can return to their respective homes, she stated.

She also reminded residents to avoid staying in their houses if they was damaged or cracked since it could endanger their safety.

Based on BMKG data, the tectonic earthquake located at sea at a depth of 23 kilometers, with a distance of 177 kilometers northwest of the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, occurred at 03:00 local time on early Tuesday morning.

The BMKG reported a parameter update to the earthquake, which was initially 7.3 magnitude to 6.9 magnitude.

The earthquake was a shallow quake due to subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate. The results of analysis of the source mechanism showed that the tectonic earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.
