It comes from Prabowo himself, but I have not met him yetJakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will summon Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to seek further explanation on the proposed resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The proposal is currently under the public spotlight, including the international community.
The head of state emphasized here on Tuesday that the proposal by the minister at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Forum at the 2023 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last weekend was a proposal personally put forth by him and was not on behalf of the Indonesian government.
"It comes from Prabowo himself, but I have not met him yet," Jokowi stated during a press conference after the opening of the Third National Work Meeting of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) at the Lenteng Agung Party School.
Hence, the president plans to summon the minister to seek an explanation regarding the proposal.
However, Jokowi is unsure regarding when he will hold a meeting with Subianto.
"Maybe today or tomorrow, I will invite (him) to ask for an explanation of what he said," the president stated.
While attending the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2023 in Singapore on Saturday, Minister Subianto presented several proposals for a peaceful resolution to the conflict following the Russian invasion of Ukraine since February 2022.
The defense minister put forth at least four proposals, including a ceasefire at conflict points, and a 15-kilometer withdrawal of troops from both sides to create a demilitarized zone.
His next proposal was the sending of a United Nations (UN) peace monitoring force and the holding of a referendum by the United Nations in areas he calls "disputed areas."
"The United Nations needs to organize and carry out referendums in disputed areas to objectively ascertain the wishes of majority of the population in these disputed areas," Subianto stated.
These proposals elicited various responses, including an official statement from the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko confirming the rejection of Subianto's proposal.
Nikolenko commended the minister's concern in striving to help restore peace in Ukraine. However, he called the proposal "like drawing conclusions from its own history."
"Russia must withdraw from Ukrainian territory, and Ukraine has the right to restore its territorial integrity according to internationally recognized borders. There are no alternative scenarios," Nikolenko affirmed.
After the proposal drew varied responses, Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin and Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Lyudmila Vorobieva, on Monday, separately visited the Indonesian Ministry of Defense to hold closed-door meetings.
