Jakarta (ANTARA) - Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Minister Basuki Hadimuljono stated that the progress in the construction of the Karian Multifunction Dam, located in Pasir Tanjung Village, Rangkasbitung Sub-district, Lebak District, Banten Province, has reached 90.22 percent.

"Please really make the work more detailed. This is just a matter of the final touches of the whole work. You can take the example of Ciawi Dam, for which the same thing is being done, so it really all depends on the supervision," Hadimuljono noted in a statement in Jakarta, Friday.

The minister advised to increase supervision over the construction work so as to ensure best quality once the Karian Dam is complete.

Moreover, Hadimuljono called to continue to make improvements in the dam's construction during the final stage of this work, especially the riprap made of round stones to prevent seepage and maintain the structure's strength.

"Keep an eye on the installation of riprap in detail, closer, not from afar. Use a water pass to make it neat," he stressed.

Hadimuljono targets the Karian Dam in Banten to be impounded in September 2023.

He urged that after the work to construct the Karian Dam is complete, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be prepared to serve as a reference for operations to optimize benefits derived from the dam.

Karian Dam has a capacity of 314 million m3 and a maximum inundation area of 1,740 hectares that can be used to increase the need for supply to the Ciujung Irrigation Area spanning 22 thousand hectares.

Apart from irrigation, the Karian Dam has the main function to supply water for meeting household and industrial needs of nine cities and districts in Jakarta and Banten reaching 14.6 m3/second, with 1.5 m3/second for Serang City, Serang District, and Cilegon City, and 0.6 m3/second for the sub-districts of Rangkasbitung and Maja in Lebak.

The dam will meet the water requirement of 0.2 m3/second for Parung Panjang Sub-district in Bogor District, 3.6 m3/second for Tangerang District, 2.0 m3/second for Tangerang City, 1.8 m3/second for South Tangerang City, and 4.2 m3/second for West Jakarta City.

The construction of Karian Dam began in October 2015, with a budget of Rp1.3 trillion, and was carried out by the contractor Daelim Industrial Co, LTD-PT. Wijaya Karya (Persero)-PT. Waskita Karya (Persero) Joint Operation.

This dam also has the potential to become a water tourism destination in Lebak District and to generate 1.8 megawatts of electricity through a Mini Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH).
