Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono emphasized that the government is prioritizing resolving issues of air pollution and respiratory disorders in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Greater Jakarta).

"The issue of the increasing air pollution and respiratory disorders has become the government's priority to resolve," he stated at a seminar on healthcare facilities' clinical management of air pollution-related diseases, as monitored online from here on Wednesday.

Harbuwono affirmed that the government's seriousness in tackling air pollution and the diseases that are caused by it was shown by the formation of the Greater Jakarta Air Pollution Supervision and Control Task Force by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The Health Ministry, part of the task force, has the duty to prepare adaptive steps for tackling the impact of air pollution.

"This includes improving information communication and health education to the public. The goal is to prevent adverse effects due to air pollution," he stated.

Related to health education for the public, the government is promoting the 6M&1S movement.

The 6M&1S consists of checking the air quality through an application or website and reducing outdoor activities and closing ventilation of homes, offices, schools, and public places when air pollution worsens.

Moreover, using indoor air purifiers, avoiding sources of pollution and cigarette smoke, wearing masks, and implementing a hygienic and healthy lifestyle also fall under the six Ms.

The S in the 6M&1S is immediate consultation with a doctor if respiratory complaints worsen.

In addition, he said, the Health Ministry conducts routine surveillance on the adverse effects of air pollution-related diseases.

"We also strive to improve healthcare services, both by improving the quality of human resources as well as by mitigating diseases related to air pollution," he stated.

The deputy minister expressed hope that the people's health would be strengthened through these efforts.
