Sentani, Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has prepared a team of personnel to anticipate wildfire risks in reserved and protected forest areas as well as build awareness among locals.

BKSDA personnel have continued to conduct public awareness campaigns on wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts for locals living near forests, the agency's head, Yulius Palita, said here on Wednesday.

According to Palita, serious wildfires often threaten the southern areas of Papua, but the province's northern areas rarely experience such big wildfire risks thanks to their mixed forest ecosystem.

In the past, a small wildfire had ravaged one or two hectares of land on the periphery of the Cyclops Mountains, he said.

Meanwhile, head of the Jayapura Environment Office, Abdul Rahman Basri, said that to anticipate land and forest fire risks in Jayapura district amid the dry season, he has coordinated with related government agencies.

He has also intensified campaigns for locals living near forest areas to build awareness on the need for supporting the government's wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts.
