…because there is no development without peace, and there is no peace without development.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, has reiterated that the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) requires a conducive environment.

"The SDGs achievement requires a conducive environment because there is no development without peace, and there is no peace without development," she explained, according to a statement received here on Friday.

She made the statement at the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speaker's Summit (P20) in New Delhi, India, on Friday, which was opened by Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

According to her, the achievement of SDGs has run into unprecedented challenges. For example, wars, rising geopolitical tensions, climate change, and uneven recovery.

She further said that unfair global order has been a factor in the slow progress of SDG fulfillment. Maharani then invited P20 member countries to intervene and achieve the SDGs target, especially by striving to realize a more inclusive world order.

"In addition, we also need to update multilateral institutions based on the economic and political realities of the 21st century," she added.

She also invited all P20 participants to redouble their efforts to accelerate the achievement of SDGs, which is important to realize a shared global future.

"First and foremost, parliaments need to review whether laws and regulations and state budget drafting are in line with the acceleration of SDGs," she said.

In addition, parliaments need to ensure the government's accountability in implementing the SDGs and fight to make the proposed global SDG stimulus of US$500 billion per year a reality, she added.

"Parliaments of developed countries are expected to persuade their governments to make a sustainable contribution to this SDG stimulus," she said.

The House Speaker then invited world countries to prioritize which targets are most important for them, according to their respective conditions.
