Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy collaborated with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Gianyar district government in Bali to hold a workshop on gastronomy tourism.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said here on Saturday that the workshop was expected to strengthen the role of and collaboration among stakeholders in Ubud, Gianyar, and Bali.

Several stakeholders, including representatives of various organizations, local and regional destination managers, business representatives, and gastronomy academics were involved in the workshop.

"Ubud was chosen as a pilot project for the development of gastronomic tourism because of its readiness and high level of collaboration between stakeholders," Uno informed.

According to him, food in Ubud is not just food but has come to represent the local lifestyle and culture.

The workshop was a follow-up and promotional event of the Gastronomic Destination Development Strategy in Ubud.

The document on the strategy was earlier submitted by the UNWTO to Minister Uno during the National Coordination Meeting on Tourism and Creative Economy and the Gianyar district government in Bandung on Tuesday (December 12, 2023).

According to an official at the Gianyar administration, I Ketut Pasek Lanang Sadia, gastronomy has been rooted in Ubud, as depicted by the reliefs on the walls of Yeh Pulu Temple, which show livestock, farming, and hunting as part of the local gastronomic culture.

"Ubud is one of the tourism icons in Gianyar, which is expected to contribute more to the regional economy through gastronomy, and the Gianyar local government will support from the regulatory side," Sadia informed.

In addition to authentic, traditional, innovative, and sustainable culinary experiences, gastronomic tourism in Ubud includes visits to local producers, food festivals, and cooking classes.
