Bekasi, West Java (ANTARA) - The West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has deployed its personnel and logistical assistance to help residents in areas affected by floods and landslides.

Acting Head of West Java BPBD Dani Ramdan said here on Sunday that at least three regions in West Java's northern region were affected by the disaster, including Karawang and Bekasi.

He explained, Karawang and Bekasi Districts were affected by the flood, and landslides happened at several points in Purwakarta.

"Apart from the assistance that has been previously distributed, the most recent assistance from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) amounted to Rp250 million for emergency support for flood in Karawang," Ramdan said.

According to him, the additional assistance was the result of continuous coordination.

His side distributed additional aid in the form of rubber boats, two refugee tents, hundreds of food packages, blankets, and mattresses, as well as two water pumps to speed up the receding flood.

"The flood in Karawang remained at 60 centimeters in height which made residents evacuated," he said.

Based on the Citarum River Area Agency study result, the Karawang flood was caused by the shrinking land that reached two meters. Shrinkage has occurred over the years which eventually created a major flood.

"As the land shrinks and it rained high, the water cannot flow to Citarum, making it flood until now. Some five villages in four sub-districts in Karawang are submerged," he said.

Meanwhile, similar conditions occurred in Bekasi City and Bekasi District. The high rainfall has made several points flooded, including roads in industrial areas.

In Purwakarta, personnel have been alerted to anticipate follow-up landslides.
