"I had a meeting with (toll road operator) Jasamarga yesterday, (which confirmed that) mobility in the return flow will increase from the homecoming flow. We need to anticipate its adverse effects," Sumadi stated after inspecting the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport here on Friday.
He said the WFH policy should be implemented as a strategy to prevent traffic congestion during the Eid return trip where travelers return at the same time before the end of the holiday period.
Sumadi said that his side had discussed the WFH recommendations and agreed to submit the proposal to President Joko Widodo.
He expressed hope that the president would agree to his proposal.
"We have a lot of national holidays, and if we have too many off days, our productivity will decrease. However, it will be on the president's prerogatives to enact this WFH recommendation," the minister said.
"I had recommended (work-from-home) yesterday, together with the coordinating minister and the police's Traffic Corps Chief," he added.
Meanwhile, Sumadi stated that the Eid return flow is expected to peak on Sunday (April 14) and Monday (April 15).
He urged residents traveling to their hometowns for Eid al-Fitr to return sooner to avoid the Eid return peak.
"I suggest (travelers) to return tomorrow (on Saturday, April 13). Do not return on Sunday or Monday," the minister stated.
Sumadi also affirmed that his side had applied strategies and exerted efforts to serve residents during the Eid homecoming and return trips in all transportation modes.
"We have prepared in detail strategies to address (potential issues) during the Eid return flow. Air and sea transportation are more practical and can be controlled more easily," he remarked.
