Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook Mukomuko district, Bengkulu province at 11.15 am on Sunday.

According to the website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKMG), the epicenter of the quake was recorded at 3.33 degrees southern latitude and 101.22 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 26 km, about 84 km southeast of Mukomuko.

The tremor was felt in Mukomuko which is about 350 km from Bengkulu city. "Mukomuko has been hit by earthquakes several times so that people were not too shocked by tremors and returned to their work only seconds later," Subagio, a resident said.

Tremors were rarely felt in Mukomuko after it was hit by a strong quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale back in 2007.

Bengkulu was hit by two strong quakes with a magnitude of 7.3 on Richter scale in 2000 and 7.9 on the Richter scale in 2000.

The two major quakes killed hundreds of people and destroyed thousands of houses.(*)
