Melbourne (ANTARA News/AAP-OANA) - The boxing kangaroo that attacked a 94-year-old Queensland woman has been put down.

Phyllis Johnson was taking the Sunday washing from the line in the backyard of her Charleville home when the red kangaroo came at her.

Towering over Ms Johnson, it slammed her to the ground, then rained down powerful kicks.

Eventually Ms Johnson managed to get to her feet and grab a nearby broom.

She struck the roo several times, dazing it, and ran to the safety of her granny flat.

Police arrived on the scene and were forced to ward the animal off with capsicum spray.

National Parks and Wildlife officers were then brought in to take it away.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) said it was euthanised on Wednesday afternoon.

"Advice from the veterinarians examining the kangaroo was to euthanise the animal as it was under considerable stress and suffering," a spokesman said.

Ms Johnson is still recovering in Charleville Hospital.
