VIENNA (ANTARA News) - Former Libyan rebels on Friday attacked their country`s ambassador to Austria as he attended an event marking the first anniversary of the uprising that toppled Moamer Kadhafi.

Islam expert Amer al-Bayati told Austrian news agency APA that several former rebels turned on Ahmed Menesi, who has represented Libya in Vienna since 2006, at the reception at the Hilton hotel, accusing him of "having robbed the Libyan people of its victory".

Police was called in to protect the diplomat.
