24 dead after quake in Aceh: disaster mitigation agency

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said 24 people had been found dead following a quake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale on Tuesday.

"Until now the total number of dead victims has been recorded at 24. Two people meanwhile were missing and 249 others wounded. This is a temporary data and may change," BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said here on Wednesday.

He said 14 of the dead victims were found in Bener Meriah district while ten others in Central Aceh district.

He said according to reports they mostly died from falling debris after their houses collapsed.

Regarding the wounded he said that some were now being treated at the regional general hospital and health centers while others were given outpatient treatment.

According to BNPB`s regional chapter, 43 of the wounded in Bener Meriah are being treated in Muyan Kute, 50 in Pante Raya health service center and 16 in Lampaha. Two people were reported still missing.

He said in Central Aceh 140 had been wounded while 300 structures including houses had been damaged.

Sutopo said some bulldozers had been deployed to open road access that had so far been blocked due to landslides that occurred because of the quake.
