"Pak (Mr) Prabowo was elected by acclamation. All the participants at the congress agreed to ask him to lead the party during the transitional period until the next congress is held," Gerindra Secretary General, Saiful Muzani, said.
Prabowo was elected to the post to replace Suhardi who died in August this year.
According to Muzani, the chiefs of the partys 33 provincial and 503 district branches, who were present at the extraordinary congress, asked Prabowo to become the partys general chairman. Prabowo is currently the partys chief patron.
He will hold both the posts until the next congress.
The extraordinary congress only elected the partys general chairman, while the line up of the partys central executive board remains unchanged, Muzani said.
With Prabowos election as the partys chief, Gerindra will hopefully remain united and strong in the future, he said.
Until 06.00 pm local time, thousands of Gerindra Party cadres and sympathizers were still crowding the venue of the extraordinary congress. Prabowo was expected to give directives to the cadres.(*)
