Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Makassar City Government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have scheduled to hold a record-breaking 2.5-kilometer (km) line of iftar, or fast-breaking meal, at Losari Beach, Makassar, South Sulawesi.

"This activity shows the close friendship between Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, and the Saudi Arabia Kingdom, as the Islamic country guarding the two holy cities, namely Mecca and Medina," Chairman of the Longest Iftar Committee Riswan Ilyas remarked here on Tuesday.

The activity will also be held in collaboration with the I-Salam Foundation where 10 thousand people are expected to attend. Tens of thousands of people will form a 2.5-km line to break the fast later.

This is the third time that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has held a mass event.

During the first time, the mass iftar was held at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, while in the second year in Padang City, West Sumatra Province, and this year in Makassar City, South Sulawesi.

"We hope this activity can promote South Sulawesi, in general, and Makassar City at the international stage, especially for Islamic countries, as one of the metropolitan cities in eastern Indonesia," he stated.

To make the activity a success, Makassar Mayor Ramdhan Pomanto has sought the involvement of all relevant stakeholders, including the National Unity and Politics (Kesbangpol) Agency, the Transportation Office, and the Public Order and Security Agency (Satpol PP).

He also involved the Tourism Office, Fire and Rescue Agency, Health Office, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Regional Water Drinking Company (PDAM), parking management, and all sub-districts throughout Makassar City to make the event a success.

The city government also promoted the mass iftar event scheduled to be hosted by the city on social media.
