Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - Prosecutors at the Belawan District Court in North Sumatra have demanded a life sentence for two drug couriers, saying they found enough evidence to prove the defendants delivered 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine.

"We therefore call on the judges to hand down a life sentence to Saifuddin alias Udin and M Saifuad alias Fuad," said Cindy Desano, a prosecutor from the Belawan Prosecutor's Office, during a court session on Monday.

Cindy argued that the defendants had clearly violated Article 114 (2) of Narcotics Law No. 35/2009 and Article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code, and that life imprisonment is intended as a deterrent against drug crimes.

"The 1,590 grams of crystal methamphetamine the defendants possessed can ruin Indonesian young people and the nation's future," Cindy said.

The presiding judge, Eliyurita, adjourned the trial until Monday, July 28, to hear the defendants' defense notes.

As reported earlier, drug traffickers continue to pose growing threats in North Sumatra despite ongoing crackdowns by the police and the National Narcotics Agency.

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the Medan District Court in North Sumatra sentenced four drug couriers found guilty of transporting 40 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine to death.

The court imposed the death penalty for drug offenses on the following defendants: Benyamin Sembiring (39), Puji Minarto Nasution (40), Senta Sitepu (40), and Sahrial (36).
